Could cheese and wine help to prevent Alzheimer’s disease?

Jirka W. PendersRecently I read an article (an incorrect resumé, edition 3. 2024) in the Dutch (professional) journal for Liquor stores: ‘Could wine and cheese help to prevent Alzheimer’s disease?’ Did this article made me happy or smile? No, I don’t think so. After reading a part of the real article in the ‘Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease’ (online) it raised more questions than answers. The real article is from the 15th of December 2020.In a period of ten years, 1787 Britons (in the age of 46 and 77) were examined after their eating habits and their alcohol consumption. The University of Iowa got access to one of the best data base systems of England.
My first question was: ‘Why did the reseachers want to examen exactly people between the age of 46 and 77? And how many men and how many women were involved in this study? We all know that there’s a huge difference in the human body of a man and a woman (especialy in genes). We also know that women are more sensitive to alcohol than men. And Asian people do not cope well with lactose and alcohol because of a gen problem. Which groups are chosen for this research programme?
That salt is bad for your heart we all know. Don’t we? To much salt can be a huge problem for your blood pressure. And that can cause problems in the future in your brain and in your heart.
During the ten years study, researchers found out that cheese can benefit your health against cognitve diseases. Even when you get older. Cognitve skills means how good you can progress knowledge and information in your brain.
The cheese may help you because of the proteins in it. But what about the fat and salt in cheese? Are they of any concern?
nice cheese And a daily consumption of red wine could also pChâteau Angélusrotect your brain. Once I heard on the BBC news that’s okay to have two alcoholic beverages a day. ‘Well then we can have two pints a day’ people said. A pint is 0,57 liter. How strange! As a wine lover, connaisseur of wine and a wine journalist it should make me happy.
But I know as we say in Dutch we have to take this article, for the moment, ‘met een korreltje zout’, with a pince of salt.
The researchers will continue this study.

  1. Apart verhaal.
